Robot Creators Face Design Paradox

A robot sporting the face of Albert Einstein, dubbed Albert Hubo, attracted a large crowd at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation in late 2005. Why was Einstein’s face chosen? Einstein certainly deserves the spot for his enormous role in advancing scientific frontiers by several notches. However, there is another reason that lies behind Einstein’s face being chosen for Hubo, the country’s first humanoid. The reason, according to Hubo’s maker, lies in the "Uncanny Valley."

Uncanny Valley refers to the phenomenon involving people’s negative responses to robots, which look human at first glance but whose differences are recognizable in a couple of seconds. According to Wikipedia, the Uncanny Valley alludes to a hypothesis about robotics concerning the emotional responses of humans to robots and other non-human entities.
