Pondering a computer with a conscience

Do we “know anything about the makeup of an electron? Does it possess its own consciousness or does it not?” Eliezer J. Sternberg ponders questions like the one above posed by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Norman Mailer just before his recent death -- the possibility posed by some of a future when computers might attain consciousness and actually meld with humans.

Sternberg, a 2005 Williamsville North High School grad and current Brandeis University neuroscience researcher studying Alzheimer’s disease, explores the science behind some current predictions.
