Representatives at Fermilab in Illinois and at Europe's CERN laboratory, two of the defendants in the case, say there's no chance that the Large Hadron Collider would cause such cosmic catastrophes. Nevertheless, they're bracing to defend themselves in the courtroom as well as the court of public opinion.

Read through the user posted comments on the site where the article is posted. It is really rather informative. I find it particularly interesting how many people immediately cry foul and "demand" that high energy experimentation stop without, of course, knowing anything about it. Definitely some strong evidence there to support that people are capable of acting without thinking.
And isn't it kind of funny that the main plaintive in the case posted his concerns about the Tevatron in a science fiction forum back in 2001. Was he thinking that people reading scifi actually believe it or that they are more susceptible to scifi based paranoia?
