Individualism is a ying meme. Altruism is a yang meme. Altruism leads to a collective sense of self, whereas individualism leads to divisional sense of self.
Is an atom an individual, or a molecule, or the collective of the molecules making up the grain, or the collection of grains making up the material an individual?
Is an organelle, the cell, the tissue, the organ, the organ system, or the whole organism an individual?
Furthermore, is the organism, the society, the species, or the entire ecosystem an individual?
How about entire civilizations colonizing space, the collective universe, or the group of the multiverse?
Perhaps the line of the individual should be drawn where cooperation ends and competition begins. In that sense, altruism and egoism are relative terms. What one individual considers altruistic, another group of those same individuals considers egoistic. In some cases egoism is an advantage and in other cases altruism is an advantage for survival. Wherever egoism goes against the norm, however, there will be altruistic dissentors that follow. Call it the bandwagon theory :)
